The LEWES FIRE DEPARTMENT, INC., T. A. SHIPLEY SCHOLARSHIP is now open for all students who live within the Lewes Fire Department service area (see map in application).Complete this application https://forms.gle/J3yWnCWbMMzMdk9T8The application must be completed no later than APRIL 21, 2026.
ELIGIBILITY: Any graduating high school senior living within the Lewes Fire Department district may apply for this scholarship. A map of the fire district is included with the application form.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Community and school service.
2. GPA, class rank, course selection and other factors such as work experience and (3) three letters of recommendation are included in the decision-making
3. The applicant must be accepted into an institution of higher learning (example: college, trade school or nursing school) to be eligible.
SELECTION COMMITTEE: The Selection Committee shall be a standing committee within the Lewes Fire Department of at least (7) seven members chosen by the Board of Directors and/or the President. The Committee shall evaluate and decide the best applicant to receive the scholarship based on the qualifications stated above and his/her goals for higher education.
AMOUNT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP: The award shall be $1,500, however, if a decision is made that there are (2) two equal applicants, each applicant shall be awarded $750. The check will be payable to the institution of higher learning. If the Committee finds no satisfactory applicant, no award shall be made.
The Scholarship is a one-time only award, good for the first year of the student’s attendance at the institution of higher learning of his/her choice.
PRESENTATION: A letter on Lewes Fire Department letterhead shall contain an announcement of the award and be given or mailed to the recipient promptly after the award decision is made. The recipient and his/her family members will be invited to attend the presentation at the Lewes Fire Department where a deceased member will be honored with a brief synopsis of the members contribution to the Lewes Fire Department. The names of both the winner and the deceased member will be added to a plaque that will be mounted on the wall in the fire department. Appropriate publicity announcing the winner will include a photograph and be posted on the Lewes Fire Department website.
DIRECTIONS:
1. Attach an essay along with the application, not to exceed 500 words.
3. Attach a copy of your academic transcript, including course selection, grades, and class rank.4. List your school and community volunteer service, and other relevant information such as leadership roles.5. List your work experience.4. Attach three (3) Letters of Recommendation.
5. Attach your Acceptance Letter from the institution of higher learning.
