Lewes Fire Dept. Inc. will host its 6th Annual Free Open House to commemorate Fire Prevention Month on Thursday, October 16th, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Station 2, 32198 Janice Road (near Nassau Bridge), Lewes. Parking will be available at the Lewes Senior Center and R.E. Michel Company. A complimentary van shuttle service will be provided to transport visitors to and from their vehicles.
There will be many activities, including equipment displays, live fire and vehicle extrication demonstrations, CPR demonstrations, a smokehouse, a drone station, face painting, and a postcard coloring contest. Kids can try on size-appropriate gear to really feel the “weight” of what it takes to be a firefighter. The event is free, offering education and entertainment for all ages.
The evening’s schedule of events:
4:00 pm Event Opens. All are invited to stop at the welcome table to pick up “Passports” and virtually register for free door prizes
5:00 pm National Anthem sung by Cape High junior, Marley Fyock, under the flag
5:15 & 5:30 pm Vehicle Rescue/Extrication Evolutions (at the rear of the building)
5:45 pm Delaware Electric Co-op Demonstration
6:00 pm “2-Minute Gear-up” Challenges for all ages (in the engine bay)
6:15, 6:30 & 6:45 pm Rolling Live Fire Response (at the rear of the building)
7:00, 7:15 & 7:30 pm Vehicle Rescue/Extrication Evolutions (at the rear of the building)
Lewes Fire Dept. tees, sweatshirts, caps, and winter hats will be offered for sale in adult and children’s sizes. Write your holiday lists because LFD apparel makes wonderful Christmas gifts. Lewes FD accepts Venmo and credit cards for easy purchasing. Fat Vinny’s, Tipsy Flamingo, Hopkins Farm Creamery, Pretzelvania, and Lewes Brewing Co. will be on-site for dinner, dessert, and beer purchases. DJ Gregg and Boardwalk Entertainment will be providing tunes and public announcements throughout the evening.
Children are invited to partake in a scavenger hunt. If they visit at least eight of the activities to have their “Passport” stamped by a member, they will receive a State Farm prize, compliments of Tommy Taylor, and a new Lewes Fire Department Challenge Coin. Sparky will be available for high fives and photo opportunities throughout the night. There will also be raffles drawn throughout the evening, including single-serve coffee makers, bike helmets, gift cards, Fire Department memorabilia, and the final grand prize: an opportunity for four people to ride in a fire truck during the Lewes Christmas Parade. Since 1796, citizens of Lewes and the surrounding area have stepped forward to join the ranks of the city’s volunteer fire service. For over 225 years, the association has been filled with men and women wanting to serve others.
