Boating is one of the most popular summertime activities in Coastal Delaware. The Ocean, Bays, Rivers, and Canals, offer incredible opportunities for fishing and recreation. 

The Lewes Fire Department operates 24/7 maritime response capabilities to support ensure your safety on our beautiful waterways, but there are a few things you can do to make your time on the water safe and enjoyable. 

• Bring the Right Gear!!
  • Did you know, Delaware Law requires every boat to have a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) for every person on board!
  • If your boat is longer than 16 feet, you must also have a Throw-able PFD.
  • Motorboats with any closed compartments are required to carry a Fire Extinguisher. 
  • All vessels are required to have a sound producing device, used to signal for help! A whistle is great to use for this. 
• Know the Safety Requirements 
  • All persons born on/after January 1st, 1978, must complete an approved Boater Safety Course to operate a motorized vessel in Delaware. 
  • Children 12 and under MUST always wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), when on-board a boat that is underway or drifting. 
  • If you plan to go out on the water, let someone else know your plans, when you are departing, your anticipated travel area, and when you plan to return. 

• Call For Help!!
  • If you need assistance when on the water, you can contact the United States Coast Guard or Local Emergency Services, via 911 or VHF Channel 16.
