At approximately 9:50 PM on Saturday, March 20, 2021, Lewes Fire Department was dispatched to a working structure fire on Savannah Road. The incident was initially dispatched as an automatic fire alarm, but was quickly upgraded to a working fire. First arriving units found smoke coming from the eaves of the home; very shortly after that, fire developed on the second floor of the residence near the chimney. Responding units made an aggressive interior attack on both the second and third floors, with the fire spreading between the walls and the floors. The fire was declared under control after approximately 50 minutes, although crews remained on scene until shortly after midnight for overhaul operations. On scene for LFD were Engines 82-1, 82-2, 82-5, and 82-9; Rescue 82; Ambulance E-82; and Command 82-8. Assisting at the scene were units from Rehoboth Beach (86), Milton (85), Indian River (80), SCEMS, and Lewes Fire Police. Slaughter Beach (89), Ellendale (75), and Bethany Beach (70) provided stand-by coverage for the companies working at the fire. The were no injuries reported.
