The theme of this year’s Lewes Fire Department Auxiliary Stop, Drop & Run 5k is “Stayin’ Alive”. Although the Bee Gees didn’t have CPR in mind when they performed that 1970’s hit, it has the right beat for providing CPR chest compressions at the right pace to revive a patient. The goal of this race is to purchase a Lucas Device, a chest compression system that can be used for performing external cardiac compressions on adult patients who have acute circulatory arrest defined as absence of spontaneous breathing and pulse, and loss of consciousness. The mechanically controlled LUCAS™ compressions are able to sustain a higher blood flow to the brain and heart compared to manual compressions. It also frees up rescuers to focus on other life-saving tasks and creates new rescue opportunities. Because this machine won’t get tired, it will keep the beat and also keep EMT personnel safer in the rear of an ambulance.
