Polar Bear Plunge
Sun, Feb 4, 2018

On Sunday, February 4, 2018, personnel from the Lewes Fire Department assisted members of Rehoboth Beach, Slaughter Beach, and Bethany Beach Fire Departments, as well as Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad and Sussex County EMS in support of the 27th Annual Polar Bear Plunge.  Several members of Lewes Fire Department participated as "plungers" themselves!  The event took place on the Rehoboth Beach boardwalk, and was attended by almost 3,400 "bears" who jumped into the 37 degree water.  Special Olympics raised $875,000 from the event.  Only two minor injuries were reported, marking another safe and successful year for Special Olympics and the participating "Polar Bears."
