UPDATED New Pictures & VIDEO Another Thunderstorm...Another working structure fire - 91 & 92 Port Lewes
Thu, Aug 16, 2007
Another severe thunderstorm roared thru Thursday evening. At 2331 Lewes FD was dispatched to a working structure fire at 92 Port Lewes. Units (Engine 5 and Command) were already out on another minor call and station 1 was manned so response time was quick as Engine 3 and Ladder82 responded immediately from station 1. Ladder 82 was the first unit on scene with unit officer, Safety 82 reporting heavy fire from the roof area of side C of unit 91 & 92. Command 82 and Engine 3 and Engine 5 arrived immediately thereafter with Deputy 82 assuming command. The bulk of the fire was actually in unit 91 from a possible lightning strike to the chimney extending into the gas heater. The fire was knocked down quickly, but unit 91received heavy damage to the 2nd and 3rd floors and unit 92 received moderate damage. Maneuvering thru the tight overgrown streets made it difficult to place the ladder and find the hydrant. Rehoboth Beach FD (normally on this box) was committed on other incidents so thanks to Milton, Indian River, and Slaughter Beach for their assistance. Special thanks to neighbor Peg Cross for video coverage. (see Audio/Video page)
