82 Marine 1 assists with the 43rd Annual Sunfish Worlds Championship

During the week of October the 6th through the 11th, the Lewes Fire Department 82 Marine 1 assisted the Lewes Yacht Club with the 43rd Annual Sunfish Worlds Championship.The event started with 74 Sunfish Racers from seven different countries. 82 Marine 1's main purpose was to provide medical assistance to the Sunfish sailors and to all the support boats. During the extreme weather conditions, 82 Marine 1 assisted when requested with placing two rescue swimmers in the water to assist several capsized sunfish boats and their sailors who were exhausted from attempting to upright their sunfish. Several boats were towed in and several people were treated for medical injures and transported to shore. Due to deteriorating weather, the Sunfish Races were canceled from Wednesday through Friday by the Official Sunfish Worlds Racing Committee. Several Sunfish boats suffered many damages including snapped booms, busted rudders, and torn sails. For more information and pictures visit www.sunfishworlds.org .
